Dustin Johnson, Jason Day, and Rory McIlroy may of been the favorites to win at the start of The Players Championship, but William McGirt and Mackenzie Hughes share the first round lead.
McGirt had two eagles and Hughes had a bogey free round to give them scorecards of 5-under par 67.
One shot back at 4-under par are J.B. Holmes, Alex Noren, Chez Reavie, and Jon Rahm.
Twelve players are at 3-under par on the crowded leaderboard after 18 holes.
Past Champions Rickie Fowler, Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott and Jason Day finished with 2-under par 70’s.
No. 1 in the Official World Golf Rankings Dustin Johnson never seemed to on his game shooting a 1-under 71.
“It just seemed like nothing was going my way. But you know, I still feel like the golf swing is in good shape” said Johnson.
Rory McIlroy finished at one-over par and told the media he had aggravated a joint in his back.
“Just aggravated that joint in my back again, the thing that sort of happened at the start of the season,” said McIlroy “I haven’t played in three weeks but started practicing last week hitting balls four to five hours a day and that was probably too much. I need to get through this week and rest and take care of the back so I will be ready for this summer and the majors.”
Masters Champion Sergio Garcia had an ace on the 17th hole marking the eighth hole in-one at No. 17 in tournament history.
