The US Ryder Cup team now has eleven of the twelve members, with Captain Davis Love III picking J.B. Holmes, Rickie Fowler, and Matt Kuchar.
Love announced his captain’s picks Monday morning at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn., home to the 41st edition of the Ryder Cup Sept. 30-Oct. 2.
This final pick will be made after the final tournament of the Fed Ex Cup Championship, the Tour Championship at East Lake, CC.
Love said the process was a tough one, and two weeks ago they had a “pretty good idea’ of who the picks were, but in the end the Vice Captains had much input in the final decision.
“I had to caution the Vice Captains that we still had one more pick to make in two weeks,” said Love.
Fowler will make his third appearance in the Ryder Cup, Kuchar his fourth consecutive, and J.B. Holmes making his second team.
Several players who had been playing well recently were left off, including Daniel Berger, and Ryan Moore.
Love talking about the Tour Championship and how it might play in the last pick,” Players need to concentrate on winning the Championship, not worrying about the Ryder Cup.”
Bubba Watson, No 7 in the World Golf Rankings, was not picked. He won early in the year, but has not had a top 10 finish since. When asked about Watson, Love didn’t mention him by name, except to say “we looked at alot of good players.”
Watson may of hurt his chances two weeks ago when asked by the media about making the Ryder Cup. “If I make it, great. I am No. 7 in the world. If I don’t make it then I get another week off.” Certainly he did not express his desire and determination as did Fowler.
Love said players in the Tour Championship and players not in the Tour Championship would be looked at for the last pick.
Here is the team, with the last Captain’s pick still to be determined.
