Saturday was one of the greatest day’s in recent Ryder Cup history. Tough matches, back and forth leaders. Emotions running high, and nerves that cost each team some points.
Add to that the hecklers. The US has had to endure hecklers when they travel to Europe, and Europe has had to do the same thing Saturday, except worse than usual.
Masters Champ Danny Willett’s brother, Peter, a writer for a British golf publication did everything but spit on the Statue of Liberty in an article he wrote and published the week of the Ryder Cup. Danny was not even aware of it, yet he caught the wrath and verbal abuse of hecklers since his brother stayed across the pond and didn’t come to face the fans he hates so much.
I won’t justify what he said by repeating it here, but it was beyond distasteful, it was hateful, and written by a very troubled and perhaps sick man.
Just an FYI Peter Willett, it might be in your best interest to never come to the US again. We forgive, but we don’t forget…… you get the picture,
Danny was very gracious in the way he handled the heckling saying he actually expected worse. I hope fans will stop and think tomorrow, in honor of the King, Arnold Palmer who passed away a week ago today, and think, would Arnie approve of this? Of course not.
In it’s conception, the Ryder Cup was meant to promote fellowship, friendship, and long lasting friendly competitions between two countries. What it has turned in to has been termed sometimes as a war.
Golf is a game. Period. War is reality and it cost’s life’s. I’ve never heard of anyone being killed at a Ryder Cup match in it’s history.
Team spirit, being proud to be an Anerican, or a European certainly is admired and expected, but in the end, it is a game, and the best team win’s.
Let’s not let one idiot who just because he has a brother who won the Masters, turn the Sunday matches into nothing more than they are suppose to be: 24 great golfers competing in the spirit with which the Ryder Cup was founded. Honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, and the love of the greatest game there is, golf.
Let the best team win!
